WINE LOFT HISTORY

Home of the Australia II

The Boatshed Market has historical significance, having formerly been a boat building facility in which the famous Australia II yacht was built for the 1983 America’s Cup yacht racing challenge.

Before the site rose to fame, the warehouse which dates back to pre 1950, was used as a wood yard, ice vendor and by the town blacksmith, Mr Frank Weston.

In 1950 it was leased as a boat building facility. 33 years later, the Australia II was constructed for designer Ben Lexcen and owner Alan Bond. Representing the Royal Perth Yacht Club and skippered by John Bertrand, Australia II went on to win the 1983 America’s Cup.

WINE LOFT HISTORY

Construction

The Wine Loft was constructed in February, 2017. In an overnight engineering feat, the roof of The Boatshed Market was removed and four sea containers were lowered in to create our suspended Wine Loft space.

WINE LOFT HISTORY

Construction

Designed by Matthew Crawford Architects and built by RK Brine Master Builders, the Wine Loft’s design seamlessly fuses the historical site’s past and present. Constructed from 20ft shipping containers, it’s suspended from the original steel gantry, underneath which Australia II (the 1983 America’s Cup winning yacht), was built.

Design

Custom openings were cut into the containers, allowing for a vast unobstructed floor area and a side entry. The container’s ends were removed to allow for large windows that look out over the market’s shop floor. Binding the containers together and to the existing overhead structure is an intricate web of steel that was carefully designed, and fabricated off site, for an overnight install.

Design

The internal industrial aesthetic is achieved using stained plywood and black steel. Bespoke wine racks wrap the perimeter and a suspended wine rack forms the centre piece of the Wine Loft.
