THE VARIETY
Chardonnay
With roots that stem back to the Burgundy region in France, Chardonnay is often regarded as the greatest and most versatile white wine in the world. Now grown in a large array of climates, the varietal’s expression varies greatly, depending on the terrier. Cooler climates like Chablis create a lighter bodied wine with citrus notes and subtle minerality. Warmer climates, on the other hand, like Margaret River produce more generous and tropical wines. Seafood is a popular pairing. But Chardonnay also goes beautifully with warm and cold salads, cheese boards and white meats.
THE REGION
Margaret River
Western Australia’s most famous wine region was established by Dr. Tom Cullity at Vasse Felix in 1967. Quickly followed by Moss Wood and Cullen. Today, Margaret River has over 150 producers on widely varying soils with the region’s best reds coming off the ironstone gravel. Within the region, areas such as the Wilyabrup Valley—a warm maritime climate—are the beating heart of Cabernet plantings. Though famous for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Shiraz shine here too.
