THE VARIETY
Riesling
Riesling, the noble grape of Germany, is one of the world’s greatest varietals. The varietal has high-acidity and very aromatic, almost perfumed, with notes of lemon, wax, honeysuckle, green pear, apricot. The grapes are used to make everything from off-dry wine to dessert-style and in turn, it’s extraordinarily versatile with food. Lighter, crisper Rieslings pair well with delicate (or raw) fish and fresh salads. With more substantial Rieslings are great with Asian food, chicken, salmon and tuna.
THE REGION
Rheingau
Rheingau lies along the north side of the Rhine across from Rheinhessen. The region is small but prestigious. The cool climate produces some of Germany’s highest quality and most age-worthy Rieslings. The Rieslings here are fuller bodied, with riper fruit characteristics. The region is also well known for botrytized sweet wines and Spätburgunder.
