Commonly known as Friuli, the region borders the Balkans, the most north-easterly region in Italy. The vineyards are between the Alps and Adriatic which means there are two different climate systems and varietal expressions vary. The Mediterranean climate and maritime conditions in the south allow for luxuriously reliable growing conditions but the alpine continental climate of the north allows varietals to bask in the sun and develop aromatic depth without overheating. The area is renowned for making wines from non-traditional Italian grapes and is particularly famous for orange wines made of Pinot Grigio and Fruilano varieties. Other varietals here include Merlot, Fruilano, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.
