THE VARIETY
Chenin Blanc
Chenin Blanc produces wines that range from bone-dry to sweet. Although the flavour of Chenin Blanc varies, the grape is known for its acidity, floral nature and honey and stone-fruit profile. Chenin thrives in cooler climates like the Loire Valley, where its acidity is preserved. On the other hand, warmer climates like South Africa and Australia are producing dry-style Chenin Blanc of outstanding quality. Fresh and fruity Chenin Blanc pairs well with vegetable dishes or salads; oaked versions pair with rich fish or cream-based chicken entrées; and sweet Chenin Blanc naturally matches desserts or serves as a balancing counterpart to rich, pungent cheeses.
THE REGION
Margaret River
Western Australia’s most famous wine region was established by Dr. Tom Cullity at Vasse Felix in 1967. Quickly followed by Moss Wood and Cullen. Today, Margaret River has over 150 producers on widely varying soils with the region’s best reds coming off the ironstone gravel. Within the region, areas such as the Wilyabrup Valley—a warm maritime climate—are the beating heart of Cabernet plantings. Though famous for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Shiraz shine here too.
